Thousands of years ago, one of this creature's ancestors received a terrible wound that resulted in permanent blindness. All her descendants have since sported white, clouded eyes that possess no optic sensitivity. In the interim, the mane encircling the creature's neck and shoulders has evolved, lengthening into a series of whip-like tentacles that bear large lidless eyes. With these, the animal may see in a full 360-degree field, with various eyes within the mane specialised for daylight, nighttime, ultraviolet light, etc. To keep them moistened, the Lamarck's Beast will periodically bring the eyes forward into the mouth and lick them gecko-style.
I hardly ever get to use purple, and my tube of purple paint was looking a bit too fat and smug, so I thought I'd take it down a notch by painting most of the background purple. 36 x 50 cm, acrylic on illustration board.
Also, a free virtual self-administered cookie goes out to those who can guess how this pic got it's title!
Interesting perspective you've got working here. I think I had a dream once with a landscape like this. The detail you've managed is very impressive, especially for acrylics. The whole this is just lovely in its imagination. Nice work!

Hey, I'm really pleased you commented on the perspective. It's the first pretty wacked-out perspective I've done, so to receive comments about it is very nice. I'm glad you liked the work, and thanks for commenting!
That is such a freaky viewpoint! Putting the viewer above the subject and pulling us in with that dark pit really sends my head spinning! So, aside from your fine texture, details, and anatomy, I believe that this viewpoint really make this picture tantalizing. I feel like I could just fall right in, and all those little eyestalks would follow me as I plummetted (Spelling?) screaming to the bottom, if there is one. Great painting, and with such a great description, too! Go, Donna, go!
I'm sure the beastie would pull you out before you fell! He'd have to or else I'd show him an eraser! Muhahah!
What's a painting without a story? I can't stand descriptions like this: "photoshop w/ wacom tablet. 5 hours". Ugh... they grate on my nerves, till the point where I'd rather jump down the aforementioned bottomless pit thingo. Well, maybe not that much... but getting there.
So, once again, thank you for commenting Peachfuzz! And you wrote a pretty awesome comment yourself.
I try to write worthwhile comments... Just like the short, lousy descriptions, I hate short, lousy comments. I mean, I'm not one to pass up even a short comment, but just "cute" or "great" is kinda annoying, wouldn't you say? I try to say WHY the picture looks the way it does to me or makes me feel the way it does.
But, I do need to start thinking up background info on my characters. I have stories and descriptions for only a few. Most are only as deep as the paper they're drawn on...
I agree, and what about the comments that are more emoticon than text? They haunt me... they're stalking me. Help!
That was cool, that last bit you wrote. With this pic, I worked the artwork around the title, basically because it was a cool title and I have trouble thinking of cool titles! I've enjoyed reading your character descriptions so far, too, so along that vein, keep 'em coming!
